Today was overcast and cold again, but that didn’t stop us from exploring the historic centre of Cuenca, full of old buildings, hidden passageways and gorgeous views over the valley from countless miradors. When it started to rain we stopped for lunch at El Secreto, a cute restaurant with views over the hills and casas colgadas. We finally got to sample some Conquense cuisine – ajoarriero, a dish of potato, cod, garlic and egg, and monteruelo, a hot game pate. We also tried the best estofado de ciervo of my life, which had a subtle sweet taste, the origin of which is hotly contested. My guesses are Pedro Ximenez or honey. Highly recommended!
